PREFACE
This software was written originally to allow members of a country
club an 'easy use' handicap system. The golfers enter their own
scores into the system which calculates and tracks their
differentials and much more.
Game scores are entered and stored in a database which can contain
an unlimited number of members (system users). The most recent 20
scores are stored in the database for each member/golfer. A home
course handicap and slope index are calculated based on these
scores. The system allows scores to be entered hole-by-hole
(individual hole scores) or gross scores (total game scores).
'Equitable Stroke Control' rules are automatically applied for
hole-by-hole entries and the handicaps are calculated based on the
Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) rules of May 1, 1992.
Here are some key features of the system:
■ Easy use
■ Easy installation
■ Configure to suit your own home course
■ Handles 18 hole, 9 hole and Par 3 courses
■ Gross or 'hole by hole' score entries

USING THE TRACKCAP HANDICAP SYSTEM
The following section contains information on:
■ Starting the system
■ General 'Member' usage
■ Administrative 'Pro Shop Staff' usage
Note: Administrative usage would normally be done by 'Pro Shop
Staff' in a club situation. It includes items like adding
members or password resets.
STARTING THE SYSTEM
To start the system, go to the subdirectory where you installed the
system (normally this will be '\TRACK'). For example, from a DOS
prompt, enter CD \TRACK. The system can now be started by entering
TRACK from the DOS prompt. If the system was properly installed,
you will see the main screen, which allows you to begin using the
system; However, Before using the system for the first time, you
will need to enter information about the golf course and its'
members. The previous 'setup/configuration' section of this manual
described how to enter the golf course information. The
'Administrative usage' section, coming up shortly, describes how to
enter and maintain information about individual golfers or members.
Note: To start the system with the screen saver option, refer to
Appendix A of this manual.
GENERAL 'MEMBER' USAGE
Before a member can begin using the system, he/she must be
registered in the system. This will be covered in 'Additional
usage'.
When a member is initially setup, they will have a password of
AAA. It is the responsibility of each member to manage their
password. Reseting the password to AAA is an administration
function. This will be covered in 'additional usage'.
The member can enter his/her scores into the system by either
entering their gross scores or individual hole scores. If they
enter hole-by-hole scores, the system will calculate their adjusted
gross score based on Equitable Stroke Control and their current
handicap.
Using the TrackCap Handicap System 4
The member can also enter scores played on other golf courses.
This is selected by the 'F2-Other Course Played' key from within
the 'Enter Your Score' function. Only gross and adjusted gross
scores can be entered for rounds played on other golf courses i.e.
No hole-by-hole.
ADMINISTRATIVE 'PRO SHOP STAFF' USAGE
These functions are considered to be administrative in nature.
They are generally performed by the 'Pro Shop Staff' in a club
situation and are related to the setup and maintenance of the
system.

APPENDIX A: SCREEN SAVER PICTURES
There are a set of 'Screen Saver Pictures' shipped with the system.
These pictures require a display capable of VGA mode and when used
in conjunction with the 'logout' utility, they will automatically
invoke some entertaining pictures after a short time period of
inactivity.
MANUAL ACTIVATION
To activate the pictures, just press the 'ESC' key at the main
screen. If your system has a MONO or CGA screen, your screen will
go blank when you try and activate the pictures. This is OK if
your purpose is to save your screen; However, it is not very
entertaining.
AUTOMATIC ACTIVATION WITH 'GOTRACK'
'GOTRACK' is a batch file which activates a freeware program called
'logout' prior to activating the main program. The purpose of this
utility is to automatically activate a series of golf pictures
during extended periods of system inactivity.
If the system is installed in a Pro Shop or Club House, the system
will be inactive most of the time. This could cause burn in of the
display screen. The 'logout' program acts like a screen saver in
these situations and will cause the activation of a series of
pictures after 5 minutes of inactivity.
The timeout can be adjusted by changing the T=5 parameter in the
GoTrack.bat file. For more information about the logout utility,
read the LO171.doc document file included with this software.
In summary, you should start the TrackCap system with the 'GOTRACK'
command if you want the screen saver pictures.
Appendix A: Screen Saver Pictures 7
APPENDIX B: RCGA RULES INCORPORATED IN 'TRACKCAP'
What follows is a very brief and incomplete description of the
official RCGA handicap rules, as they are used in this system.
Please contact your local golf course or the RCGA for the offical
'Handicap System' rule book.
DIFFERENTIALS
There are 2 kinds of differentials: 'Straight' and 'Slope'. Both
'Straight' and 'Slope' differentials are stored for each game
played. The 'Straight' differential is just the adjusted gross
score minus the course rating. The 'Slope' differential is
calculated by the following formula:
'Slope' Differential = 113 X ('Straight' differential)
-------------------------------
course's slope rating
More difficult courses, have higher slope ratings; therefore, the
formula will adjust 'Slope' differentials accordingly.
Note: PLUS differentials displayed by the system are in fact
negative and therefore the total differentials reflect this fact.
e.g. If a golfer had a +5 differential and a 5 differential, the
total of these 2 differentials would be 0. The system handles all
numbers correctly and will display the proper handicap and index
numbers for each golfer. Only Mathematicians worry themselves
about mathematical signs. Golfers consider PLUS scores as better
than MINUS scores. Its that simple.
HANDICAPS
There are 2 kinds of handicaps: 'Differential' and 'Course'. Both
of these are calculated and stored for each golfer based on their
last 20 games played. At least 5 games must be played for a golfer
to have a handicap.
The 'Differential' handicap is derived by applying the best
differentials to the RCGA/CLGA handicap differential table. The
selection of handicap differentials and table can be obtained at
most country clubs or from the RCGA handicap system rule book.
The 'Course' handicap is calculated by the following formula:
(Golfer's index) X (Course's slope rating)
----------------------------------------
113
Note: Again.. PLUS signs are considered as mathematical MINUS
signs.
Appendix B: RCGA Rules Incorporated in 'TrackCap' 8
INDEX
The 'Slope' index is a rating of the individual golfer's ability.
It is used to calculate their 'Course' handicap. This means that a
golfer will have their handicap adjusted to suit the course played,
based on their abilities and the difficulty of the course played.
The index is calculated by the following formula:
index = Average of lowest 'Slope' differentials X .96
Note: The lowest 'Slope' differentials will be chosen from games
played during the last 2 seasons of play. Check the official RCGA
rules.
Note: The index number is NOT 'rounded' off but rather it is
truncated to the nearest tenth. e.g. 12.462 becomes and index of
12.4.
Appendix B: RCGA Rules Incorporated in 'TrackCap' 9
APPENDIX C: VARIATIONS FROM THE OFFICIAL RCGA RULES.
This version of 'TrackCap' is intended primarily for individuals to
track their own handicaps; therefore, some RCGA rules are not
strictly adhered to but some work-around solutions follow.
Consecutive 9 hole rounds are not automatically tracked and
recorded in the system. 9 hole scores are simply doubled and
treated as 18 hole scores. The golfer could track their 9 hole
rounds separately and then enter them as 18 hole scores.
Alternatively, they can enter them in the system for tracking
purposes, then re-enter them later as 18 hole scores after deleting
the 9 hole scores.
'Tournament scores' are not considered different in this version of
the system. They can either be tracked separately by the golfer or
this software can be upgraded to consider 'Tournament scores' and
adjust them according to the RCGA rules.
Appendix C: Variations From The Official RCGA Rules. 10
APPENDIX D: THE PAR 3 COURSE
The Par 3 course in this system is a 9 hole par 3 only. It should
not be used for handicap calculation purposes but is offered as a
means of tracking Par 3 games. A member is setup as a Par 3 golfer
and that member would only be allowed to enter scores for the Par 3
course. If you play both the Par 3 and the regular course, the
member should be setup as 2 separate golfer/members but only the
regular course golfer/member should be used for handicap tracking.
Use scores entered under the Par 3 member as a record of Par 3
games only.
